All links in the text of this page are for other sites. While I use these sites to varying degrees, please don't hold me accountable for any glitches or errors in their content! Each text link opens in this browser window, but if you click the

icon on the right of the text link, it will open in a new browser window. If you use this icon, for another page, the next link will open
in that same new window, so if you want many windows to open, you will have to use the 'right click> open link in new window' option. The links are organized by the following topics:
Menu of Links
- Tools
Colour pickers, browser marklets, super programs, all the little things that make being a web designer easier and more enjoyable.
- PHP
- Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)
Tips, validators, and references, all the online links you need to learn how to create excellent cascading style sheets. These will make your life much easier, once you get around the browser wars (ugh).
- General Design
including colours, layout and useability. All aspects of design other than the other sections.
- Dynamic HTML
Personally, I think it is over-rated, and too slow, but in small bits, it can convey a lovely feel and function to a site. Beware using all the tools just because you can.
- E-commerce
Alternative resources, opinions and some other links to articles that may change your mind.
- Fonts and Typography
Fonts are addictive, but there are also concerns with how you use them on the web. Some of these links may help, or may clog up your hard-drive with funky fonts you look at and never use. Such is the sacrifice of the font junky...
- Graphics
Tutorials for PhotoImpact and other graphic applications, tips on how to use graphics on the web, scanning tips, resource sites and others.
- HTML, XHTML, Meta Tags
More and more, people forget that the basics, the foundation, supports the pretty stuff. Don't be on of those, make sure your structure is clean. Includes links to online validators, programs, and the latest from the w3c, you know, the folks who make the rules.
- JavaScript
Free scripts, tutorials, lessons, ideas and other online resources for those learning, those who don't want to learn, or those who recognize that using someone else's expertise is an advantage.
- Web Standards
Our goal is a standardized web. Imagine not having to keep in mind your Uncle Joe's 486 with a 13" monitor when you design! The standards we are striving for are simple - full implementation of the HTML, XHTML, CSS and XML languages in both Netscape and IE (and any other browsers). Period.
- Bulletin Boards
What good is designing in the dark. Expose yourself to your peers in one of these forums (please send me others that have heavy traffic and deal with peer support for any aspect of web design).
- Zero Cattle's local competition
in all fairness, there are a lot of different styles and options in the Vancouver area. Take a look and see, then come back to Zero Cattle and negotiate your web site!

Tools
Bookmarklets - Design tools
These design tools are downloaded into your browser and used from either the bookmark or the favourites section. They are simply JavaScript helpers in the move towards a better web. Samples are below:
EditPad
I do all my coding in EditPad because I can open all the files at once (in one window, you know, not with 100 windows open), and do a mass search and replace, or add a bit of code to every single page. As well, this is postcardware, or rather you can download the program from his site, but he asks that you send a postcard from your city (with the city name on it) to him in Belgium. Apparently he collects such postcards, and really, for a couple of bucks postage, this is a great little -- really little -- program. It fits on a floppy with room for your HTML files if you code on the go.
Just got a note from the creator of EditPad, Jan Goyvaerts, that says the next version due out in 2000 will have unlimited levels of undo! Imagine the freedom! The current version offers a 'save backup copy' option, but you must turn it on.
NoteTab
is another alternative to NotePad, and for those who forget their tags, this is a good program. Built like EditPad (above), it offers a handy reference library and some other features that make it quite useful, like stripping HTML code to leave just the text. It comes in a freeware NoteTab Light and a not-at-all-freeware NoteTab Pro. Both are nice. Something about Europe, I guess, as this program is from Switzerland.
PhotoImpact
Anyone who knows me knows I am just tickled with this economical program. Ulead creates plug-ins for PhotoShop, and have developed their own program. Version 5.0 is now available and from all reports is excellent and cures some of the missing pieces from 4.2 -- wanna buy it for me? Comes with the reknowned SmartSaver (also available as a stand-alone image saver) and Gif Animator, among other goodies.
PaintShopPro
is the reputed competition. I only include the link because some like to use both. Some crazy folks use both WITH PhotoShop! What a world.
Java Script It!
A Canadian programmer in Southern Ontario created this nifty little, inexpensive program that will create lots of cross-browser JavaScript effects.
CoffeeCup ImageMapper
I swear by the little program. It nicely creates the code for any image map, with options for status bar messages, onMouseOver messages, rectangular, circular and other shapes for hot spots. It is fast, accurate and small. Oh, and cheap!

Cascading Style Sheets
Style Sheets came into being in 1995 and are still only roughly supported by the popular browsers. Luckily, that is improving. If you want to move to the next tested wave of design, where the content is separate from the structure, this is for you.

BUILDER.COM - Web authoring - Web development for 4.0 browsers - get started with cascading style sheets - try the Style-o-Mattic

The Web Review's Database of CSS Articles
Like the title says, this excellent site has a huge listing of articles devoted to CSS1, CSS2, quirks, bugs and support as well as tutorials and reference lists.
w3.org: Cascading Style Sheets
the beginning and best list of links and tips and validators.
W3C CSS Validation Service
Speaking of validators, this will clean it up for you, whether your CSS is online, on your hard drive or if you paste it in. The online version works best, and it will tell you where you went wrong as well as STRONGLY recommend that you have a valid HTML tree to support the CSS.
webreview.com - style.webreview.com
Web Review - A Quick Tour of CSS2
webreview.com - The Master List
You MUST bookmark this site if you don't want to lose your mind with the various support of CSS. It outlines what is supported, by what browser, by what version, and how well. Want to know why your pretty code isn't working? This is the be-all and end-all of answers.
The Little Shop of CSS Horrors
A dated little rant about the poor support for CSS, it is still fairly enlightening to the newbie, and entertaining to the old hack.
Web Review - Inheritance: Friend And Foe
Ah, one of the little trials of learning a new language is the differences in dialect. This is a must read for the more advanced CSS author, as it helps you simplify your code and make sense of what needs to be repeated. Like those endless

These links contain either inspirational sites or information sites. While there are plenty to choose from, I have narrowed the selection to the ones that I like. 'Cause, like, it's my site, see?
High Five
is David Siegel's flagship of design opinion. They provide sites of visual merit, though I often find the sites are both unweildly in a bandwidth sense, and poorly organized with 'creative' navigation. In their defense, they are usually artistic sites, where that sort of thing is often overlooked.
High Five Babbel-List
Or more clearly, a moderated newsletter discussing web design issues.
Web Wonk
On a David Siegel binge, it turns out some of his older work (1995, 1996) involved a lot of 'giving back' to the world that was starting to embrace him. To that end, Web Wonk contains dated (CSS 'cured' a lot of his concerns) but still valuable notations on layout and typography. This link is also in the
Fonts and Typography listing.

web pages that suck -- Bulletin Board From the book by the same name, this comprehensive board has local 'experts' on JavaScript, HTML, spelling and grammar, graphics, and more. All the members participate at their level of expertise, but the board in general is at a semi-professional standing. what I mean is that most folks have been doing enough to have a serious information base, but few are at the professional level. By professional, I mean getting paid to do it for more than 390 hours. I don't mean to imply any subjective evaluation of skills or knowledge. Average age of this group would be in their 30's, with folks older, and some pre-teens and young teens participating as well.

The Cyber-Crew Message Forum is a members only forum for those interested primarily in graphics work. One big plus is their index of tutorials for various graphics programs, their positive attitude towards art on the web, and promotion of copyright infringement information.
